Every April, friends and family gather for a springtime picnic. We hold it every year, rain or shine. When the weather is beautiful, all the better, but good weather certainly isn’t a prerequisite. If it’s chilly, we bundle up. If it rains (as it did several times this year), we roll with it. (Okay, we aren’t animals. If there is a storm or it is absolutely freezing, we move the picnic inside.) What I am trying to get across is that this isn’t just any ordinary picnic – it’s the picnic.

To illustrate, a few years ago a newcomer was apparently dreading the event, imagining mayonnaise sandwiches and a checkered tarp. (I don’t know the actual thought process, but I am probably in the ballpark.) However, something quite different was waiting. Think pretty picnic hampers overflowing with goodies. We never arrange anything – the chaos only adds to the charm.

You can find oysters on ice next to country pate and pastries. There is smoked salmon, a pile of freshly baked baguettes, olives, crab legs and more. Much more. We have a truly embarrassing amount of food at this picnic. There are usually a few oddball things too, like a random jar of anchovies or jam that inexplicably finds its way into the spread.

Most importantly, there is always enough wine (red, white & bubbly) to entice friends in the area to join our little party for as long as they would like. For a few splendid hours, everything seems right with the world.

(Trust me – it’s a whole thing. Seafood from one market, cheese and charcuterie from another, that little bakery for the bread. And on it goes.) Once the shopping is finished, we load the picnic baskets and head to Central Park to set up (dogs in tow).

There is no dress code. Come as you are. This year, I wore white jeans and a cute sleeveless cowl-neck top with oversized gold buttons down the back. I usually arrive in pretty shoes but leave in something more practical. This year was no different. I entered the park wearing pointy gold flats (also featured in this post), and left in flip-flops. I always throw a pair of boat shoes and flip-flops in my tote so I can partake in any impromptu games that require more practical footwear.

The vibe is decidedly laid back. The dogs are probably running amuck. But everyone is laughing and smiling. The food is delicious, the wine is on point, and, above all else, the company is second to none.

Indulgent? Maybe. But the end result is totally worth it.

Happy picnic-ing, everyone!

xo, Eva
