I am a big believer in eye creams. The delicate skin around your eyes requires a different formulation than a standard moisturizer. Plus, the orbital area tolerates active ingredients differently than the rest of your face. (For example, a moisturizer with retinol would be too intense for your eyes.) Besides, the orbital area is one of the first places to show signs of aging. Isn’t that enough of a reason to give your peepers a little extra pampering?

Ingredients to Look For

The most effective eye creams contain peptides or retinol, both of which prevent and diminish the appearance of fine lines, crows feet and wrinkles. As a bonus, peptides stimulate collagen growth and retinol tightens the skin.

Hyaluronic acid is also a stellar ingredient. It plumps skin, which diminishes the appearance of wrinkles. Niacinamide (B3) is another power house ingredient and fights hyperpigmentation and other signs of aging.

I also look for caffeine and antioxidants, both of which combat puffiness. Antioxidants (think vitamins C and E) protect against free radical damage. Caffeine constricts blood vessels, which helps minimize the appearance of dark circles. That said, I have yet to find a product that eradicates those pesky under eye circles (you can thank your genes for that), so caffeine isn’t a make-or-break ingredient for me.

My Eye Cream Picks

I keep several eye creams in regular rotation. I recommend using an eye cream both in the morning and night, after applying your serum(s).  Okay – onto my picks!

Kate Somerville Line Release Under Eye Repair Cream. This is a freaking phenomenal eye cream. It has a lovely formulation that is lightweight, silky and moisturizing, without feeling overly heavy or thick. It is chockful of peptides, so it promotes collagen growth and prevents ad reduces the appearance of fine lines. This cream also contains a derivative of hyaluronic acid to plump up wrinkles and correct that dreaded crepey look. Plus, this lightweight cream contains a whole host of goodies to fight puffiness and brighten the skin around your eyes. I use this product year round, morning, (sometimes noon) and/or night. perfect prep for makeup too. Utterly brilliant! (holy grail status)

Verso Super Eye Serum with Retinol 8. Holy heck! This is one gem of a product. It is loaded with retinol that is specially formulated for the sensitive area around your eyes. It tightens sagging skin, protects your stores of natural collagen, fills out wrinkles and prevents future signs of aging. This type of retinol is even safe to use in the sun, so you can use it both day and night. (As always, be sure to wear sunscreen during the day.) It also contains niacinamide, that super duper ingredient that combats hyperpigmentation and wrinkles. While it may not be the most hydrating of eye creams, it has never left me flaky or dry. In fact, my under eye area always feels perfectly moisturized with this product. Your eyes will look brighter and younger immediately, and the results only get better over time. Makeup glides over this like a dream too. I use it at least once a day. Verso for the win! (holy grail status)

Tata Harper Restorative Eye Crème. This product is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. If you have read any of my beauty posts, you know how much I love Tata Harper’s product line up. Fortunately, this eye cream lives up to the brand’s reputation (and my expectations). It is created with 100% natural ingredients, but don’t let that fool you. It’s a serious eye cream and has more than earned its place among my favorite eye products. It is thicker than the other creams on this list and is incredibly moisturizing. Despite the thickness of the product, it isn’t greasy at all and quickly absorbs into your skin. It plumps fine lines, brightens the entire eye area and helps your skin retain hydration. I also love that you can use this around the whole orbital area, including your eye lids. Use it in the morning, evening or both. It plays well with makeup too. This one is a no brainer in my book. (holy grail status)

First Aid Beauty Eye Duty Triple Remedy AM Gel Cream. At its price point, this product is tops. It is a super refreshing gel-cream designed to deliver a “burst of cool hydration” upon use. I keep mine in the refrigerator to up the cooling factor even more. Use it in the morning to increase hydration, combat puffiness and help with the appearance of fine lines. (It contains caffeine, peptides and a bunch of other goodies.) You can use this on your entire eye area, including the lids. Plus, it is designed specifically for the mornings to help prime your skin for makeup application. What more can a girl ask for?

Kiehl’s Eye Alert. While I haven’t noticed long-term effects from this product, it deserves a spot on this list because it works miracles after a late night or a long flight. It is marketed for men, but don’t let that throw you off. It contains some seriously hydrating ingredients, but its real power lies in the combo of vitamin e spiked with a massive dose of caffeine. I am not exaggerating when I say this product immediately decreases under eye puffiness. Apply it and a) watch eye puffiness magically disappear (which is fun the first time) or b) enjoy five more minutes of beauty sleep. Personally, I’m inclined toward option b. 😉 It comes in a handy little tube, so it’s perfect for your purse and travel. You can reapply it over concealer throughout the day too.

Shiseido Sun Protection Eye Cream SPF 34. I was introduced to this product by a friend a couple of months ago and immediately fell in love. While this is not an eye cream, it is a crucial part of any skincare regimen. The orbital area is often neglected during sunscreen application, but this handy little product solves that problem. It provides lightweight SPF protection designed specifically for the delicate orbital area. Plus, this sunscreen absorbs quickly, never pills under makeup and doesn’t leave any white residue behind. It is water and perspiration resistant too, so it won’t sting your eyes. Wear it on its own for beach days or apply over your eye cream every other day. (Make sure to wait until your eye cream has completely absorbed into the skin before applying.) Genius!

Final Thoughts

While crows feet, fine lines and crepey skin are inevitable, don’t go down without a fight. These products obviously won’t replicate the effects of Botox or surgery, but they will go a long way in preventing these problems in the first place and minimizing whatever issues you are dealing with now. Incorporate an eye cream or two (or 3 or four) into your regimen and “eye” promise your future self will thank you!
