With the holiday season in full swing, it’s time to deck the halls and deck your wardrobe with fun holiday party looks. Whether your event is super low-key, a bit formal, or something in between, this guide has you covered from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve.
Option 1: Keeping it Casual
A laid-back celebration doesn’t mean you still can’t look smart. A brightly colored chunky sweater is fun and classic, with the added benefit of concealing any post-party pooch. (It is my firm belief that if you don’t indulge in a slightly gross amount of cookies/pie/eggnog/guacamole/wine, you are probably not taking advantage of the perks of a casual party. 😉 ) Pair it with tailored cropped pants to offset the oversized sweater. I like these black faux leather leggings for their slimming effect and stretchiness (which is just as important to me this time of year!). To finish the look, slip into a pair of pointed flats that have a touch of whimsy. Think unexpected fabrics or patterns (I lean towards velvet, tartan or suede this time of year) and embellishments like tassels or an oversized bow. (Bonus points for fun, unexpected colors.) Add a headband or hairbow, and you are all set for a fun, relaxed event. Plus, you will look fab in all those Instagram photos that one friend (you know the one) insists on posting ;-).

Option 2: An Elegant Shindig
For a more formal celebration, you want to look great while still feeling comfortable. (You need to be able to drink that bubbly!) The perfect solution is a little black dress that is equal parts sweet and flirty. (You can save your fitted LBDs for a different night/time of year.) Plus, your new LBD will get you through a whole host of holiday events. These kitten-heeled pumps embellished with an oversized bow in velvet and suede are the perfect festive addition. Admittedly, this particular pair may be a bit of an investment piece, but you will want to wear them nonstop all the way through spring. (Trust me! They look great with everything from jeans to cocktail dresses.) Alternately, try these less expensive velvet dupes (complete with oversized bow), available in black and an assortment of bright colors. Just add some fun costume jewelry and off you go! (These are some of my fave holiday party outfits. Who doesn’t like to dres up?!)

Options 3: The In-Between
When neither tailored pants nor a cocktail dress will do, why not opt for the universally flattering sheath dress? Practical and elegant, a sheath dress will strike the perfect balance for your “casual, but not too casual” holiday party. Sheaths are staples in my cold-weather wardrobe since they are so versatile – dress it up, dress it down, or layer it when the weather turns brutal (turtlenecks, enormous cashmere blanket scarves and opaque tights to the rescue). Fun heels (my favorite, surprisingly comfy mary jane pumps work great here), simple drop pearl earrings, and your favorite A-line jacket or dresscoat finish this easy-peasy look. A sheath dress will fit the bill for a whole host of holiday celebrations, like work events and friendly get-togethers.
Look 3: Smart-Casual Outfit Details (The Sheath Dress)
A parting note: I purposely selected items that you will get a ton of mileage out of, regardless of which outfit you choose. By layering and accessorizing, you can easily turn one outfit into several looks. So treat yourself before the holiday frenzy begins and walk into the season feeling your best!
Happy holidays and happy shopping!
