Is there anything better than a lightweight, cotton frock on a sweltering, humid day? I don’t think so either. A summer wardrobe staple wardrobe, the humble cotton dress deserves some serious love. Come August, I practically live in sweet, breezy numbers like this one.       Kate Spade Cotton Dress - Color block Dress - Wicker ClutchYou can dress them up (and I say that with the loosest interpretation possible – think kitten heel slides and a little lip and cheek stain) or keep it simple with bare feet and a big, messy bun. Either way, you will be the coolest (read: not “glistening”), smartest dress gal around.

While this particular number is no longer available (I snagged it during the last Kate Spade Surprise Sale), I rounded up five options that will keep you cool as a cucumber without sacrificing any style points.

Cotton Dress Round-Up
  • Kiel James Patrick Where Do You Summer Dress. KJP seriously upped their summer game with an assortment of light, cotton dresses that are made to be worn beachside, poolside or – work with me here – berry picking. (Can’t you totally see these in a strawberry patch, splattered with juice? I can, and guess what? It still looks amazing.) Perfectly chic thanks to clean lines and timeless prints (red, yellow or blue stripes and a pretty floral option), I will totally understand if you pick one up in each print and wear nothing else for the rest of the summer. (I plan on doing pretty much exactly that.) Pair it with this belt for a cute, nautical-inspired look. The epitome of August dressing.

  • Draper James Sarabeth Seersucker Dress. This breezy dress strikes the perfect balance between charming and practical. It is uber flattering too – there isn’t a body type that wouldn’t look good in this A-line number. Perfect in pretty much every way, this sleeveless, striped option incorporates a few shades of blue and pretty grosgrain ribbon. It also has a large key hole detail that is both cute and smart. (It amplifies the breeze factor where you need it most.) If that isn’t brilliant, I don’t know what is. Plus, it has pockets. I wore this particular dress here during for a delightful day in the countryside. I promise it is every bit comfy as it is pretty.

  • Kate Spade Lace Inset Fit and Flare Dress. This dress is a total stunner – a gorgeous choice for those occasions where you just need a bit more. (More wow, more charm, more flare. You get the idea.) This cotton and linen blend midi dress will look phenomenal at that cocktail party/vineyard wedding/dinner date that inevitably falls on the hottest day of the year. It comes in a spicy, orangey-red hue that was made to be worn on a sultry summer night. Plus, the cut of this dress is ridiculously flattering, includes pretty lace detailing and twirls with the best of them. A no brainer in my book. • Sail to Sable Cabbage Ric & Rac Dress. This adorbs dress is perfect for those occasions where you want to look equal parts darling, ladylike and pulled together. (So basically, it is always a good choice.) Technically, this dress is “cabbage viscose,” but I have no idea what that is and it is too darn cute to leave off my cotton dress round-up! Reach for this for work, a shower or a fun girls’ brunch. The pretty pastel color, flattering shape and ric & rac (zigzag) detailing will get you through most outings in style.

  • Lilly Pulitzer Mila Shift Dress. No discussion on summer dressing would be complete without mentioning this classic cotton shift dress. I chose one in my favorite Lilly print of the season – Lilac Verbena, complete with fun pom detailing around the neckline. 100% cotton and 100% classic, you already know where to wear this dress. (Hint: the answer is everywhere.)
