It may be counterintuitive, but one of my favorite pieces for summer is a chunky fisherman’s sweater. I have an embarrassingly large stack reserved exclusively for the warmer months. These sweaters are not only practical, but majorly versatile too. You can wear it any which way and will always look effortless.

Just think about it. A fisherman’s sweater is equally appropriate in the city, country or by the sea.  It makes the perfect beach cover-up and is essential on any boat ride (it is called a fisherman’s sweater after all 😉 ). Plus, it comes in handy during a sudden downpour and will never let you down if the temperature drops after sunset. I like to size up one or two sizes for a more relaxed look.

Here, I am wearing an off-white fisherman’s sweater with my favorite faded, light wash jeans. In the city, cap-toe ballet flats and a structured, leather tote are the perfect companions.

When you are by the coast, swap out the ballet flats for boat shoes and the leather tote for something more low-key like this leather and wicker cutie or this straw and silk tote (both from J.Mclaughlin, both destined to be my go-tos this summer). Paired with white jeans, you have a classic look that will take you from sailing to brunch to cocktail hour.

In the country, just throw on wellies with darker wash jeans and you are ready for gardening or a relaxing stroll with the dogs. (I am always splattered with dirt in the country, hence the darker jeans.)

On warmer days, opt for practically any pair of shorts instead. Just throw the sweater over your shoulders or keep it in your tote for later.

This sweater is the workhorse of my summer wardrobe. I mean, how many pieces look equally good in all of these scenarios? Exactly. Plus, when the leaves start to change color, just layer it over a button down for a preppy look that is perfect for fall. Any way you wear it, you will look put-together and timeless.

In fact, as I am writing this I realize I may need just one more fisherman’s sweater after all. Happy shopping!

PS: AG Jeans is currently having their annual sale (25% off!) with code FF25! Take advantage by heading to agjeans.com to stock up on lightweight favorites for the summer like the faded pair I am wearing in this post and this white pair.
